About Our Department

Supporting Students & Families

Child Welfare & Attendance is a student and family support service. We assist families with understanding compulsory education laws, student admission and enrollment procedures, student discipline procedures, transfers to alternative programs, and school climate and safety.

We advocate for students and families and work to connect them with the support and resources they need to be successful.

Addressing Barriers

We help address psychosocial needs and other barriers that may adversely affect a student's attendance, engagement, and success in school.

School & Community Partnerships

We partner with schools and community agencies to provide support for students and families and help maximize student success.

Promoting School Attendance

We promote positive school attendance practices for PK–12 students and work with families and schools to support consistent attendance.

Our goal is student success. By working together with families, schools, and community partners, we can help students overcome barriers, stay engaged in school, and make the most of their educational opportunities.

Families should be aware of recent Louisiana laws addressing student safety, responsible technology use, school threats, and drug-free school zones.

Know the Law. Help Keep Our Schools Safe.

Students and families are encouraged to understand these laws and talk about the serious consequences that can result from unsafe choices at school, online, or through electronic communication.

ACT 619 OF 2026

School Threats & Safety

Louisiana law addresses terrorizing or menacing school property, school-sponsored functions, and firearm-free zones.

Schools are required to provide age- and grade-appropriate information about the crime and its consequences to students in grades six and above and to their parents or guardians.

Students should know: Threats involving a school can have serious disciplinary and legal consequences. Students should immediately report concerning statements, messages, or threats to a trusted adult or school official.

AI-Generated Images & Digital Safety

Louisiana law addresses unlawful conduct involving certain images of another person that are created or altered using artificial intelligence.

The law includes provisions involving certain unauthorized AI-generated nude or sexual images, including additional protections involving minors.

Students should know: Creating, possessing, or sharing certain unauthorized AI-generated images can have serious legal consequences. Think before creating, saving, sending, or posting digital content involving another person.

Marijuana & Drug-Free School Zones

Louisiana law provides specific penalties for marijuana violations occurring in drug-free school zones.

The law also addresses smoking, vaping, or otherwise abusing controlled dangerous substances in these protected areas.

Drug-free school zones include:

School property
Areas within 2,000 feet of school property
School buses

Covered marijuana violations may result in imprisonment for up to one year, a fine of up to $1,000, or both.

A Message for Students & Families

Please talk with your child about responsible choices at school and online. Threats, misuse of technology, and violations involving controlled substances can result in school disciplinary action and may also carry legal consequences. If a student sees or hears something concerning, encourage them to report it immediately to a trusted adult or school official.
